Greatness

“The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” — Pope Benedict XVI

Greatness. What is it? Before I can talk about this I think we need to look at the word. “Greatness is a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person or object. Greatness can also be referred to individuals who possess a natural ability to be better than all others.” This is one of the definitions you can find online.

There are so many things I think are truly great in this world. Music! Some music is clearly superior to other music. Places—I think Assisi Italy is the greatest place on earth! These are Great things. 

How many truly great people do you know? People with  “The natural ability to be better than others.”  I know a few. I think we all have greatness in us. We all have the ability to become great, but for some, it comes easier than others. Everyone is great at something whether that be playing video games, school, your job, or anything else. We are great at something. No one is best at everything. Sometimes we just get comfortable with people, or things in our lives. Figure out the areas in your life you have become comfortable and fix it, become great. 

Greatness is also choosing that right thing to do instead of what is most fun. Greatness is following the Lord no matter where He takes you, no matter how much it hurts or makes you uncomfortable. Greatness is loving people past their flaws and willing the good of them.

We all have greatness in us. Why do we sometimes choose comfort, pleasure, or fun instead of greatness? I’m not saying that comfort, pleasure, and fun are bad. because they aren’t and they can help us achieve greatness if you use them properly. Where in your life do you choose ways that may cause you to sin, rather than choosing to do things or live in a way that takes your passions and gifts and strengthens them? Choosing greatness can be hard, but that is what makes it so great! Some areas choosing greatness is the most important thing you will ever do!   

Start choosing to be great! Some people are really gifted with this quality of greatness, and I believed they could easily change the world for the good! Yet sometimes they chose the easier path or the more fun path—they chose to be comfortable. Great people choosing to be comfortable is how evil will win. If we all choose to be great we will change the world!

We Only Have Today

Stop dwelling in the past! Recently I was talking to a friend and we were thinking about the past and decisions we made (or didn't make), about the way we treated some people, and the things we may have missed out on because of it. This conversation reminded me of a quote from that same friend. “Find a goal or something that inspires you! (Heaven is that goal) And strive towards it with your whole being.
